this letter & accompanying article sent to us from the New England LGBT Veterans

Friends,

Today is Veteran's Day. After what happened in the House Wednesday (ENDA Passes House Without Trans Protections), I don't feel much like wanting to be an American any longer. I'm not even going to march in the Atlanta Veteran's Day Parade with the other GLBT veterans as I planned.

ransgender people have been in every war, served in every branch of the service, have achieved every rank and have been awarded every medal this country has, including the Congressional Medal of Honour. We have done every job the military has, served in every base, port, ship, drove every vehicle, operated every weapon, flown every aircraft and served in every hospital the American military has. We have done our part to preserve the freedom of everyone in this country. If you ask us, we will tell you that we are veterans first, who just happen to be transgender people. And, we are proud to have served this great country.

Since the mainstream media has seen fit to overlook this important topic we have chosen to X-post this this letter & accompanying article to honour both Veteran's Day/Remembrance Day (November 11th) as well as Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20th). Perhaps you might also wish to do the same and pass it on down the line.

ENDA is the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and if passed it would extend federal employment discrimination protections that are currently provided on race, religion, gender, national origin, age, and disability to cover both sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many people who hate and fear the LGBT Community do not want this bill to pass. They are spending big bucks and working tirelessly against it.

UNITY - Keept the T in the LGBT Community - Support a Trans-inclusive ENDARecently some well-meaning but we feel ultimately misguided people agreed to drop the protection for Transpeople to try to get more votes.

NYABN along with many other people and groups feels this is wrong.

We do not want to sacrifice our friends to gain some advantage for ourselves. We would prefer to fight on for another 30 years than do that.

Read a statement by Wendy Curry, President of BiNet USA about this topic & where the Bi Community stands.

Completely confused (as we are!) about why a few members of our own community and some of our purported "srt8 allies" don't support equal rights for all LGBT people?

Read "Conventional thinking about why trans people won’t be in ENDA, courtesy Rep. Rob Andrews" from "Forked tongue and a dirty house" by Kate Forbes.

Sign an on-line petition to Speaker Nancy Pelosi asking her to please make sure that (ENDA) includes transpersons

Here are some fantastic excerpts from an article on why the "incremental" strategy of Barney Frank on ENDA is a big mistake:

The ENDA Debacle by Michelangelo Signorile.

"It's . . . a huge mistake to remove gender identity from the bill. Those who've argued that it's "pragmatic" or part of "incremental" gains are making all the wrong comparisons, and I think they know it. They say, for example, that this is equivalent to accepting, where possible, civil unions for now over marriage: Even though we believe marriage is the goal we herald civil union gains as an interim measure. But that doesn't wash: Whether it's marriage or civil unions it's still for all of us and not just some of us. (Or did I miss the part where some genius said, Let's pass civil unions for lesbians first and come back to the gay men later, since lesbians might be less threatening than gay men?) Incrementalism does not mean cutting out whole groups of people.Read more... )
