Says Nicholson, “This is the year for the Democratic leadership to demonstrate comprehensive support of women, ending this outdated practice and to state publicly that it supports true family values.”
The Democratic Party is refusing to allow moms who are elected delegates onto the floor of the Convention if they must bring breastfeeding babies or small children in tow. There are no accommodations for on-site childcare, leaving women with very few options.
When you refuse to allow children into an event, you are by default refusing admission to their caregivers, most of whom are women. By not offering childcare, you are privileging mothers and fathers who have partners and/or money, and therefore excluding single parents and/or poorer families. It is a form of disenfranchisement that must end.
One mom, Susie Shannon, a California delegate from Los Angeles, is fighting the DNC rules so her four-year-old daughter Gracie can accompany her onto the convention floor. “It’s either allow children on the floor or provide child care,” Shannon said. ”You can’t expect that every single woman who is a delegate can leave their child at home in another city for week and go to the convention.”
Dear Democrats don’t you see? Words are not enough. The degree of difficulty = how little some people matter actually matter.
Please sign this petition to the DNC to make the convention accessible to All Women including those who have small children.
